What
my correspondents told me…
about
Montier in US !
notre cousinage !
Woody Montier
m’écrivait en mai 97 :
“...Our oldest known ancestor is David Montier. He was born in Montivilliers, France, in
1804. His father may have been Jean
Baptiste Montier, or he may have been lived in a house on that street in
Montivilliers. He moved to Maryland to join his brother Timothy. David's
brother Timothy was married to Mary S. Kelly when the three of them moved to
Texas as land grant settlers in the 1830's.
Mary S. Kelly was born in Ireland in 1820. Timothy's ranch was twice the size of David's (640 acres) because
Tim was married and that was the way the Spanish doled out the land back then.
They set up ranches somewhere south of San
Antonio. David's brother was killed by
a lone Indian trying to rob the house (if
I remember that story correctly).
His brother's wife was pregnant with their first child. David and the widow then moved to Port
Lavaca, TX in 1836 where their was more protection and where they were
married. I guess this was a sore point
that wasn't disussed much by the family, but I try to refrain from passing
judgements. The child was Frederic
Senator Montier, born in 1854 in nearby Victoria.
Frederic died in 1937, he was my great
grandfather. Frederic married Francesca
J. Gaines in 1885. They had 8 children,
mostly, if not all daughters except for my granddad, Constant William Montier,
born in 1893. Consie, as his friends called
him, was the only one of the 8 children that did not die with lots of
money. Back then, a person had to be
lazy, stupid, or unlucky to not wind up rich in Texas. At one point, Consie was well on his way in
the teamster business between Oklahoma City and San Antonio. But my grandmother
made him call in all his men and horses to give the men Christmas off one year,
and a disease killed all but three of his over 200 horses. Consie was able to support himself and his
family, but he never regained the wealth that he would have otherwise
held. I have some very well off second
and third cousins...just my luck.
The Montiers were a prominent family in Port Lavaca, a
town on the coast whose population never exceeded 15,000. David was a cobbler there, I don't know if
he had previous experience or not.
Frederic was a baker, and wound up with a restaurant and a soft drinks
bottling company. Nothing remains of
either business today. I have one great
Aunt Rosenna still alive today, in her 90's.
Her son works as a director in the state's water conservation
department. Water rights can be very
critical in some Texas locations, and I think he makes sure the State takes
whatever water they want or need...”
Jacqueline
Montierth, établie en Arizona est également une fidèle correspondante depuis 3
ans. She once wrote to me :
« … I would explain
the Montierth name, which is so similar to yours. A man named Samuel Morse Somes was born 29 Dec 1824 in
Wiscassett, Lincoln County Maine. He
moved to Boston, Massachusetts after the death of his father, when he was five
years old. When he was 18 years of age
he became acquainted with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter©Day©Saints,
commonly known as "Mormons".
He was baptized into the church at age 21. Disowned by his family
because of this, he took up residence with a French family by the name of
Montier. He changed his name from
Samuel Morse Somes to Alvin Moroni Montierth, taking the Montier name and
adding a TH to the end, to establish his own name.
As far as we know, all the
people with the name Montierth come from his family. He had four wives, two of which gave him children. Harriet West Crapo and Alvin had eleven
children, eight of them were sons. He and Susannah Griffin had two
children, Melvin Griffin Montierth and
Adeline Maria Montierth Jones. My husband Jack Montierth is the grandson of
Melvin Griffin Montierth...”
